Portland mayor plans for study of river taxi

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler released his proposed budget for the 2019-2020 fiscal year on Wednesday, and it includes an item that could one day lead to a new transit option for Vancouver commuters.

The proposed budget allocates $200,000 to the nonprofit Friends of Frog Ferry for a set of studies to examine the feasibility of a water taxi service along the Willamette and Columbia Rivers.

The group, led by Portland resident Susan Bladholm, unveiled a proposal in November for a public-private partnership to operate a fleet of passenger-only vessels on a 38-minute route between Vancouver and Portland, with the possibility of future expansions to Lake Oswego and West Linn.
