A closet within a home in Yacolt caught fire Friday morning, temporarily displacing the residents but causing only minor damage.
The blaze on Northeast Sunset Falls Road came from a structural defect in the wall near the chimney, according to Chief Shaun Ford of Clark County Fire District 13.
“There was a hole in the mortar,” Ford said, and over time the wall got too hot. “It set the material in the closet on fire.”
The firefighters had the blaze under control in about 15 minutes and extinguished within an hour. It’s likely the family will be able to return home within a day or so, he added.
“The house was definitely safe,” Ford said.
