For some athletes from Clark County, it’s already in full stride.
Erykah Weems won the 400-meter hurdles for Central Washington on Saturday at the Willamette Invitational in Salem, Ore.
Weems, a junior from Hudson’s Bay, crossed the line in 1 minute, 4.03 seconds. It’s the first time she ran that event since winning the Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship in a personal-best time of 1:00.10 last season.
Weems, who won two state hurdles championships as a senior for Hudson’s Bay, also took second in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.12 on Saturday.
Among other local track and field athletes, Seattle Pacific sophomore Julia Stepper was part of a 400 relay team that ran a school record and the second-fastest time this season in NCAA Division II on Friday. The Woodland grad ran the No. 2 leg as her team finished in 46.23 seconds at the Aztec Invitational in San Diego.
Ethan Tonder, a sophomore from Mountain View, placed third in the shot put at the Willamette Invitational for Central Washington. He had a mark of 58 feet, 10 1/2 inches and also placed fourth in the hammer.
Brooke Roy, a freshman from Camas, set a Cal State Monterey Bay record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Hornet Invitational in Sacramento. Her sixth-place time of 11 minutes, 12 seconds broke the school record by seven seconds.
Peyton Fredrickson, a senior from Skyview, opened Washington State’s outdoor season with two wins in the high jump. Saturday, he cleared 6-foot-9 to win the Sam Adams Invitational in Spokane. The previous week, he cleared 6-10 3/4 to win at the USC Trojan Invitational in Los Angeles.
Baseball
Aaron Shoup, a senior from Woodland, struck out 11 and walked none in 8 innings of Saint Martin’s 2-0 loss to Montana State-Billings on Saturday. Shoup is the ace of the Saints staff. He’s 2-3 with a 3.20 ERA and is fifth in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with 39 strikeouts.
Trevor Huddleston, a senior from Woodland, pitched seven innings, striking out six, to earn Concordia a 3-2 win over Central Washington on Sunday.
Alex McGarry, a redshirt sophomore from Columbia River, hit his fifth home run of the season in Oregon State’s 3-2 win over California on Saturday. It came one day after he homered in a 3-2 loss to Cal. McGarry is hitting .356 this season.
Equestrian
Hannah McDonald, a Columbia River graduate and sophomore civil engineering major at University of Tennessee-Martin, earned all-United Equestrian Conference honors in reining. McDonald averaged a team-best 68.4 scoring average with six wins. UTM is ranked sixth in NCAA Division I reining and qualified for the national championships April 17-20 at Baylor.
