Two dogs were rescued Tuesday morning in a fire that damaged a house near Dollars Corner.

The fire was reported at 8:47 a.m. in a house at 22606 Northeast 50th Avenue. Fire personnel arrived at 8:51 and saw smoke coming from the attic of the two-story home, Clark County Fire and Rescue Chief John Nohr said.

When firefighters arrived, a woman said her dogs were inside the attic, Nohr said. Upon entering, they found a fire in the laundry room that extended into the second floor.

Firefighters found two small dogs in the upper floor and used pet rescue masks to give them oxygen, Nohr said. A third dog, a brown lab, had already escaped.

The home, built around the 1940s, had an addition to it that allowed fire and smoke to reach an upstairs bedroom from the laundry room, Nohr said. While smoke and fire damage affected both floors, the brunt of it took place in the laundry room.

The blaze was extinguished within 10 minutes, Nohr said. “It was just not a big place, so it didn’t take very long to get it under control.”

The woman, and only person in the house at the time, was evaluated for smoke inhalation but declined further treatment, Nohr said. The Red Cross was on scene to assist the woman and her dogs in finding a temporary residence.

A heated lamp in the laundry room was being explored as the likely fire source, Nohr said.
