Clark Asks: Mystery of the tarp-covered sign to be investigated

45% of voters drawn to question about old Fred Meyer sign

All the signs point to the winner of the March Clark Asks voting round.

Reader Audrey Anna Miller asked, “Why is the old Fred Meyer sign covered in black tarps still up on Fourth Plain and Grand Avenue?”

Some 45 percent of voters wanted to know more about what some see as an eyesore on Fourth Plain Boulevard.

Clark Asks is a feature The Columbian launched in 2017 encouraging readers to ask questions about Clark County. We do our best to find the answers.

“Why was the Evergreen School District established on the east side? Why did the Vancouver School District not expand east?” received 30 percent of the vote in the March round and “How does the County determine what streets are on the schedule for repair?” got 25 percent.

A reporter will tackle the winning question in the coming weeks.

If the question you voted for didn’t win, don’t despair. Sometimes we investigate the runners-up, as well. And some questions will reappear in future voting rounds.

Recently, reporters have tackled how highway reader boards calculate travel times — a WSDOT system using radar sensors lets drivers see estimated times — and whether or not Interstate 205 impacts the weather — it doesn’t, according to experts, but occasionally you can experience different climates on the east and west sides of the freeway.

If you have a question about something going on in your neighborhood, in Clark County or how a national news story connects to the area, submit it online at www.columbian.com/clark-asks. We’ll be choosing questions for our next voting round soon. All of the stories we’ve written based on reader questions can be found there, too.
