One year after winning its third national championship, the Oregon State baseball team hasn’t let off the throttle.

With a 14-3-1 record and ranked No. 4 in the nation, the Beavers look poised to make another drive toward the College World Series.

Two athletes from Clark County have played big roles in helping OSU fire up their engines this spring.

Alex McGarry, a redshirt sophomore from Columbia River, has been one of the Beavers’ hottest bats this season. The utility player is hitting .377 with 15 RBI and a .506 on-base percentage, all third-highest on the team.

McGarry has homered twice in the past three games. Saturday, he homered and hit a go-ahead single in the ninth inning as Oregon State beat UCLA 7-3.

McGarry, who earned all-state honors at Columbia River, is in his first season at Oregon State. He played at Tacoma Community College in 2017 before missing last season after undergoing surgery on a bone in his hand.

Also playing a role is Preston Jones, a junior from Mountain View. The outfielder helped Oregon State reach the World Series the past two years, especially through speed and defense.

Jones has started 13 of 17 games this season, hitting .239 and having scored 12 runs, third-highest on the team.

Women’s basketball

Jossilyn Blackman, a senior from Battle Ground, had 18 points and 10 rebounds as Lewis-Clark State beat LSU Alexandria 69-66 Friday in the second round of the NAIA tournament. The Warriors will face No. 1 Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) in the Elite Eight on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Men’s basketball

Trevor Jasinsky, a junior from Camas, was one of five players voted to the 2018-19 the All-West Region first team by the Division II Conference Commissioners Association. The forward averaged 19.1 points and 7.1 rebounds for Western Washington, which finished the season 15-15.

Women’s rowing

Alexa Dietz, a freshman from Camas, helped San Diego State’s varsity 8 to a first-place finish Saturday at the Hornet Invitational outside of Sacramento, Calif.

Softball

Teaghan Cowles, a junior from Columbia River, is hitting .355 while starting at third base for Stanford. The Cardinal return to action after a two-week break on Saturday with their Pac-12 opener against California.

Kennedy Ferguson, a freshman from Camas, earned her second win of the season in New Mexico’s 3-1 win over San Diego State on Friday. Ferguson allowed only one unearned run over seven innings.

Men’s golf

Spencer Tibbits, a sophomore from Fort Vancouver, finished sixth at the Bandon Dunes Championship on March 12, leading Oregon State to a 10th place finish. Tibbits was 1-over 217 for his third top-10 finish in seven tournaments this season.

Men’s tennis

Andrew Kabacy, a freshman from Skyview, won his No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles matches for Willamette against Pacific Lutheran on Sunday. Kabacy is 2-0 in Northwest Conference singles competition and 1-1 in doubles matches.
