CAMAS — The Camas School District did not have adequate internal controls over its free and reduced-price meal verification process to ensure accurate eligibility determinations, according to a report released Thursday by the Washington State Auditor’s Office. The district received $593,799 in funding for the School Breakfast and National School Lunch programs for eligible low-income students whose households meet specific income requirements.
In the 2017-2018 school year, the district was required to verify a sample of four household applications. The audit found that internal controls were not effective to ensure verification was done correctly. In one example, the district used a household’s net income rather than gross income.
The error resulted in a failure to collect $111 in the district’s food services program.
“This error allowed the student to qualify for free lunch instead of being required to pay,” Superintendent Jeff Snell wrote in an email. “Our staff have updated our procedures and training around this compliance item.”
