UPDATE: The man is safe on the ground, according to a Vancouver Police Department tweet. The highway is now open in both directions.

State Highway 500 is closed in both directions near Northeast 42nd Avenue and Falk Road after a man climbed over the fencing on a pedestrian overpass, according to the state Department of Transportation.

The closure began at 12:37 p.m. and is ongoing. A young man was threatening to jump, and police were attempting to talk him down, Washington State Patrol Trooper Will Finn said in a tweet.

“People are getting through, but they’re being diverted to side roads,” transportation department spokeswoman Celeste Dimichina said.
