Herrera Beutler bill aims to help Purple Heart recipients get loans

Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Battle Ground, has reintroduced a bill to expand a home mortgage loan program to active-duty Purple Heart recipients.

The legislation would waive the funding fee, between $4,000 and $10,000, for a Department of Veterans Affairs home loan program among current military members who were wounded in action.

Currently, the fee waiver is only available to wounded veterans, not active-duty service members.

In a media release, Herrera Beutler said the bill “seeks to recognize the tremendous sacrifice of the thousands of service members who were wounded in battle and continue to serve our great nation. I am proud to reintroduce legislation that does right by our military heroes and helps make it easier for their families to afford homes.”

The move would affect around 8,000 active-duty Purple Heart recipients nationwide.
