Weather Eye: ‘White rain’ too wet to stick, but it sure is a spectacle

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. Oh, I know that doesn’t sound quite right for March, does it? I could have used that phrase last December, but of course the weather wasn’t in winter mode yet.

Snow began falling in the early morning hours in Clark County and worked its way northward a little farther and stronger than some forecast models. Yesterday it was snowing all the way up Interstate 5 to Bellingham.

Of course, solar heating through the clouds with the higher sun angle of March meant precipitation turned to rain or a mix in many places. Then back to snow. With temperatures hovering just above freezing, the snow had a difficult time accumulating, leaving a trace on bark dust and grass. This was mostly in the areas of your yard that would have been in the shade. See, some warmth even through those thick clouds this time of the year.

As the afternoon wore on, it got darker and darker. At 5 p.m., the snow was still falling, and there were some huge flakes at times. Fortunately, the roads were in good shape, just wet. I don’t think anyone minds this kind of ‘white rain’, at least you don’t have to shovel it. Something to talk about but nothing more. That is unless you were up a thousand feet or higher. Our local weather observers were reporting one or two inches at elevations in our eastern foothills.

As of 4 p.m. yesterday, Vancouver recorded a high temperature of 35 degrees after an overnight low of 29 degrees. We will have another chance of rain and snow showers, depending on elevation, through early Friday. Then we dry out and warm up slightly for the weekend.

At last, I see a pattern change in our weather, with highs next week inching upward, maybe not to normal but close. Meanwhile, at 4 p.m. Wednesday, it was 33 degrees and snowing here in Vancouver. In Spokane, it was closer to 40 degrees and raining. Say what?

We’ll chat on Sunday and see if we can see that first 60-degree day on the horizon.
