Weather Eye: It’s March now, but our weather doesn’t seem to realize that

The sunshine was marvelous Monday, and nice blue skies and a breeze. Wait a minute, maybe more than a breeze. I was daydreaming there for a second. The cold east winds were blowing, and what looked nice out the window was something else once out in the elements.

Even with the full March sunshine we could only muster a high of 43 degrees here in Vancouver. That is 12 degrees below average. I guess since we are on a roll, we will forecast 43 degrees again for today. Monday morning it dipped to 25 degrees and into the upper teens in the outlying regions of the county.

Looking over the weather maps late Monday, I can’t even find a high close to our 55-degree normal high for the date. There are hints that things remain dry and warm up next week, but that is tempered by other forecast charts that say hold on.

A weak system drifts down from the north later today, and another skirts by to our south. That combination will change the flow of air aloft from the southwest and could bring some moisture here running atop the cold dry air from the Gorge. That equals snow flurries or maybe a light dusting. And snowflakes could be in the offing clear through the weekend in some places.

Really? It is the first week in March; we should be talking about spring weather, not winter weather that appears to want to hang on. So, we wait it out. Boy, that first 60-degree day will feel like summer after all the cold weather. Spring fever will erupt quickly.

Meanwhile, violent springlike weather in the form of tornadoes ravaged Alabama and Georgia over the weekend. My heart and prayers go out to those affected. What a horrific event to start the tornado season.

Locally we get watches, warnings and advisories for bad weather, but how would you react to the one issued in Alabama Sunday? “A tornado warning emergency. You are in a life-threatening situation. Complete destruction is possible.” I can’t even imagine. Count your blessings.
