Vancouver-based industrial laser company nLIGHT introduced a new version of its Corona brand of fiber lasers this week. The new unit, called the CFX-8000, can be tuned to adjust the laser beam’s size, shape and power, with a range of up to 8 kilowatts.
nLIGHT got its start building CO2 and fiber industrial lasers with fixed power levels, but last year, the company debuted the first of its programmable Corona models, which allow manufacturers to re-tune a single laser unit for a variety of cutting tasks that would otherwise require multiple laser units.
The first three Corona models had maximum laser-power outputs of 3 to 5 kilowatts. On recent investor conference calls, nLIGHT executives have stated that the company’s biggest competitive advantage comes from its high-power laser technology, and it intends to continue to expand its lineup in the high-power end of the industrial laser market.
