A woman was taken to the hospital Monday evening after jumping off of the Interstate 5 Bridge into the Columbia River.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the bridge shortly before 5 p.m. A couple was walking on the Washington side of the bridge when they noticed a woman getting ready to jump, Vancouver Fire Capt. Dave James said. The couple attempted to pull the woman back but could not stop her.

After a bridge tender put out a distress signal, the American Empress cruise vessel dropped a rescue boat into the water, James said. The rescue boat flagged down another boater who pulled the woman onboard.

The woman was taken to shore, where emergency responders performed CPR near the former Red Lion Hotel Vancouver at the Quay, James said. She regained a pulse and was transported at 5:28 p.m. to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center.
