Woodland Middle School students learn horticulture

WOODLAND — Horticulture students at Woodland Middle School are learning a great deal about growing plants. Joe Bosch, a science and math teacher who also has a green thumb, is helping them learn how to research plant growing requirements, develop natural herbicides and pesticides, practice seed germination, cultivate soil to ensure health and more. “Horticulture is a wide and ever-expanding field,” Bosch said in a news release. Students pick a packet of seeds from the school’s catalog, which has a selection enhanced by Baker Creek Seeds, which donates 100 packets to the class each year. This year’s class successfully grew a crop of hydroponic tomatoes, which means they used an irrigation and fertilizer system to grow the plants without soil.
