A dog died in a house fire Monday morning in North Salmon Creek.
Clark County Fire District 6 crews were dispatched shortly after 2 a.m. to 15508 N.W. 21st Ave., for a residential fire.
The initial crew to arrive found flames shooting several feet out of the west side windows of a two-story home, the fire district said in a news release. The occupants were not inside the house.
“The residence is in a rural neighborhood, and the nearest hydrant was 1,600 feet away,” the release said.
The fire district deployed all of its engines but still needed help from Clark County Fire & Rescue. A Vancouver Fire Department ladder truck also assisted.
At one point, firefighters had to exit the burning house because nearly all available water had been depleted, according to the fire district. “But the hydrant source was secured quickly and crews went back in to knock down the fire.”
It took roughly 40 minutes to extinguish the blaze.
Despite giving CPR, one dog died due to smoke inhalation from the fire. One firefighter was injured.
The Red Cross was called in to support a family of four.
The Clark County Fire Marshal is investigating the cause.
