Yakima ends E-Verify requirement for businesses

YAKIMA — Yakima officials have scrapped a measure that required businesses contracting with the city to use a federal electronic system that verifies if employees are eligible to work in the U.S.

The Yakima Herald-Republic reported that the Yakima City Council voted 4-3 Tuesday to no longer require businesses to use E-Verify to screen their workers.

Some business owners told the council the requirement stretched limited resources by having to dedicate time and money to train staff to use the system. City Manager Cliff Moore told the council that only four other cities in Washington state use E-Verify.
