Weather Eye: Enjoy today’s sun; cooler temps, showers on the way

We have one last day today with warm temperatures and sunny skies before a trough of low pressure will slide down the British Columbia coast and bring cooler temperatures and showers Thursday and Friday. Wednesday will be a transition day.

It is not forecast to linger long, which is a good thing for the big parade Saturday in Portland. Skies will be clearing Saturday. We should get back to normal for the highs. Sunday could see a high of 80.

Next week we see highs in the 80s and maybe a 90 here and there if warmer air materializes. It will be pleasant along the coast with highs at 70 degrees or better. Summer has arrived.

We really need the rain this week. No complaints with the showers, which should total between a quarter and one-half inch depending where you are.

The summer months of June, July and August are forecast to be warmer and drier than average. Good news for outdoor activities but maybe resulting in a volatile wildfire season.

We could always hope for a gloomy cool summer, but I doubt that will occur, especially considering our recent trends of warmer and drier weather.

Over the weekend we had highs around 80 degrees, which is still above average. Monday cooler northwest winds were on the breezy side, bringing cooler air our way. Boy when that trough comes in later this week and highs struggle to get in the low 60s, it will feel chilly. Have your sweatshirt handy.

OK let’s end with a few old bits of weather lore. “If June is sunny, the harvest will come early.” “A good rain in June, sets all in tune.” “A wet June makes for a dry September.” “If it rains on June 27th, it will rain for seven weeks.”

I don’t know about that last one. I hope that it’s not accurate!
