Letter: Herrera Beutler loses her way

By Michael Spence, Vancouver
Published: July 21, 2019, 6:00am

When Jaime Herrera Beutler first ran for Congress, I was pleased to vote for a Latina, a person who shared many of my views. How I’ve been wrong: During the Trump administration, she’s abandoned any attempts steer an independent course and has voted the party line almost without fail. Any claims she may make about integrity fail in light of her support of Trump, despite his constant misogyny, racism, ineptitude and especially his constant lying/misstatements (what is it, over 11,000 and rising?).

The final straw was the recent vote, when she, along with her morals-bereft Republican colleagues, failed to condemn Trump’s racist tweets concerning her fellow members of Congress. Yes, the “squad” is comprised of far-left Democrats whose views are incompatible with many of us outside of their blue bubbles. No, the “squad” is not un-American, nor foreign, nor treasonous. Trump’s suggestions that they should “go back where they came from” is based upon years of similar shouts throughout history from other bigots.

As a Hispanic person, perhaps Herrera Beutler may be only too aware that she’s only a few votes away from being cast by Trump as someone who “doesn’t belong” in America. Is she smart? Or scared?
