Airman Maxwell Smith, a 2018 graduate of Mountain View High School, serves aboard the service’s newest aircraft carrier, USS Gerald R. Ford in Norfolk, Va. Smith is responsible for operating the weapons elevators and maintenance on the elevators on the 1,106-foot-long warship.

“I joined the Navy to help me get a start in life and get training in a trade I could use outside the military,” said Smith. “This being my first command, it helps me get acclimated to being on ships.” Smith’s brother is currently in the Army, and his father was Army Airborne.
