180,000 smoke alarms recalled

Thousands of smoke alarms have been recalled because they may not activate properly, failing to alert people of fires, authorities say.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said about 180,000 Universal Security Instruments smoke and fire alarms are covered under the recall, which was issued Wednesday. The company has gotten more than 130 reports that the alarms have failed to properly activate during installation, according to the commission.
