Weather Eye: Sunglasses in tote, umbrella in car good ideas for this week

We have just about made it through the extra-long holiday without any torrential downpours. We did get a few hours of light rain early Saturday in Vancouver and most parts of the county.

Don’t expect warmer or hotter conditions as some forecast models indicated a few days ago. Poof, just like that it was gone. Expect a good marine influence to continue to hold, longer-range models now say, for another 10 days or more.

The reason for all the clouds and a continuing chance of drizzle or showers is that the northern jet stream is undercutting a strong ridge of high pressure over Alaska. Up there they have had record heat and sweltering temperatures well into the 90s. We didn’t make it out of the 60s Saturday. The high as of 5 p.m. was 66 degrees.

On the Fourth of July, Vancouver reached 79 degrees while Anchorage, Alaska, had 90 degrees, beating the record of 85 degrees set in 1969.

I do think we see more sunshine Monday and may get to 80 degrees or so. The past several summers we have had a strong, hot ridge of high pressure over the Four Corners area and, hence, heat waves locally as well. That hasn’t developed yet, so we’ll get some on-again off-again summerlike weather until the overall flow of things settles into a more normal position.

Despite the lack of much in the way of summer heat, many readers passed on to me that their corn was knee high by the Fourth. Right where it should be. The rest of the garden is doing nicely as well.

Enjoy your week, sunglasses in tote and maybe the umbrella in the back seat.
