A transient man who allegedly approached a woman from behind and started groping her as she walked in Vancouver’s Fircrest neighborhood, made a first appearance Friday in Clark County Superior Court.

Curtis Nathanial Fountila, 28, appeared on suspicion of indecent liberties with sexual motivation and unlawful imprisonment stemming from the Wednesday incident.

The woman was walking in the 1430 block of Northeast 136th Avenue when an unknown man, later identified by police as Fountila, came up behind her and grabbed her buttocks. She turned to confront the assailant, but he grabbed her shoulder and stopped her from getting away, according to an affidavit of probable cause.

The woman told Fountila no in Spanish and fought to get away, she said, but he continued to grab at her breasts. She was able to call a friend for help, who drove to the scene and saw Fountila assaulting her friend, the affidavit says. The friend called out to Fountila, and he fled.

Responding officers located him at the nearby WinCo store, 905 N.E. 136th Ave. Fountila told police he touched the woman’s buttocks, saying “slap her on her (expletive) is the only thing I did.” He denied anything further, according to court records.

Police said Fountila “clearly appeared to have some mental health problems,” and he reported suffering from bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and post-traumatic stress disorder, court documents state.

On Friday, Judge Suzan Clark set Fountila’s bail at $10,000. He will be arraigned July 11.
