A major earthquake from the Cascadia subduction zone off the Pacific Northwest coast could be the worst natural catastrophe ever to hit the nation.
Allison Pyrch, a Portland geotechnical engineer with Hart Crowser Inc., will discuss the potential for a big earthquake to hammer the region during the next Science on Tap presentation Wednesday at Kiggins Theatre, 1011 Main St., Vancouver.
Pyrch, the American Society of Civil Engineers Oregon Section’s Engineer of the Year for 2018, has traveled to different countries following major earthquakes, including Chile in 2010, Japan in 2011 and Mexico in 2017, to study the aftermath and recovery efforts.
The Science on Tap event begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday, with doors opening at 6 p.m. Beer, wine, pizza slices, popcorn and snacks will be available for purchase.
