The Vancouver public works department warned city utility customers to look out for an email scam where targets are tricked into sharing personal information.

Several city utility customers have received emails that appear to come from a “City of Vancouver Account Payable” email address. The email asks customers to download a fake invoice file, or to share account information through a suspicious link. The emails also include a “Filemail” logo and fake invoice number.

The address, invoice number and everything else about it is a scam, according to the city.

Actual electronic utility bills from the city state they aren’t to be replied to, and provide customer details, such as service address and account number. They also carry a link to the city’s secure online payment site.

The email bills never ask for customers to download an invoice, share their account information with others or provide sensitive information in a response to an email.

The city recommended customers who get a similar email to delete it. Customers with questions about emails or calls from parties claiming to represent the utility can call its services desk directly at 360-487-7999 to speak with customer service, which can confirm whether any communication is legitimate.
