The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced Saturday that it awarded about $2 billion in renewed homeless assistance funding across the United States, including $61 million for Washington and $1.7 million for Clark County.
The money funds programs, such as homeless shelters, for people experiencing homelessness or those at risk of becoming homeless.
“At this time of year, thousands of local homeless assistance providers receive federal funding to operate and maintain stable housing for those living in our shelter system and on our streets,” HUD Secretary Ben Carson said in a news release.
“Renewing these grants will come as a huge relief to these providers, and it will allow them to continue their work to house and serve our most vulnerable neighbors.”
Clark County’s $1,717,678 in funding will go toward existing programs and expanding the Homeless Management Information System. Funding for new projects will be announced later, HUD said.
