A Vancouver man suffered serious injuries Monday when he was hit by a car while crossing the street in Hazel Dell.

Jesse Gellatly, 34, tried to cross Northeast 99th Street near Northeast Seventh Avenue after 6:40 p.m. and was not inside a crosswalk, Clark County Sheriff’s Sgt. Chad Rothenberger said.

Seconds after stepping foot on the road, a car swerved to barely avoid Gellatly, Rothenberger said. A woman driving a Toyota Tundra then struck him despite hitting the brakes.

Gellatly was taken by ambulance to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center with serious, but not life-threatening, injuries, Rothenberger said. Authorities believe he was under the influence of alcohol.

The two westbound lanes where Gellatly was hit were blocked off for a little under an hour.
