It was a historic night at Mark Morris on Tuesday.
It started with the Monarchs commemorating coach Bill Bakamus notching his 600th career win last month.
It ended with Ridgefield get its first win over Mark Morris, perhaps ever.
Matt Gama scored 20 points and Josh Mansur added 16 as the Spudders rallied to beat Mark Morris 60-58 in overtime.
“We were talking after the game,” Jason Buffum said. “I have two guys who were (coaches) here before me working closely with out staff. Greg Ford has been here 30 years, and he said he couldn’t remember it ever happening.”
Mark Morris led most of the game, taking a 52-45 lead into the fourth quarter.
“Matt Gama and Josh Mansur kind of took over in the fourth quarter,” Buffum said. “And (Stefan) Vossenkuhl hit all three of his 3-pointers in the second half.”
The Spudders seized the lead in overtime but had to withstand a late scare from Mark Morris.
“It was the type of game that both teams did enough to try to lose the game,” Buffum said. “We fouled a guy on a 3-pointer when we were up three in overtime.”
That fould came with Ridgefield up 59-56 with 2.5 seconds left. The Monarch made two free throws, missed the third and Ridgefield got the rebound.
“We got fouled and made one of two free throws,” Buffum said. “They got the ball, chucked it toward the basket. It missed. Game over.”
The win tied Ridgefield for second in the 2A Greater St. Helens League at 4-2 with Mark Morris.
“This win was huge because it was an opportunity for us go on the road against a good team in a great environment and get the win,” Buffum said.
