A driver’s medical problem led to a three-vehicle crash Tuesday morning on Interstate 5 in Vancouver and sent him to the hospital.

Around 8:40 a.m., Eddie L. Beaudin, 56, of Vancouver was heading south on the freeway, near Exit 3, in heavy traffic when an apparent medical issue caused him to accelerate from the exit lane, according to the Washington State Patrol.

His Saturn Ion struck the right front fender of a Mercedes sedan and then the undercarriage of a tractor-trailer, according to the state patrol.

Beaudin was transported to a local hospital. His condition was unavailable.

The driver of the Mercedes, Andrew J. Miller, 52, of Vancouver, and the driver of the tractor-trailer, Ernesto Fernandez, 49, of Gresham, Ore., were uninjured, the state patrol said.

Troopers attributed the cause of the crash to Beaudin’s medical problem, and he was cited for second-degree negligent driving.

Wet weather and collisions slowed Tuesday morning’s commute around Vancouver and Portland. Congestion stretched for miles on I-5 and Interstate 205 at times.
