Trailing 17-1 in the first quarter, the Hockinson girls basketball team needed a spark.

The Hawks bench provided it.

Hockinson beat Ridgefield in a 2A Greater St. Helens League game that showed a team’s value goes well beyond its starters.

Hockinson clawed within 24-16 at halftime, then won by outscoring the visiting Spudders 20-7 in the fourth.

“I’ll give my bench the credit for getting us back in the game in the second quarter,” Hockinson coach Damon Roche said. “This is a good team win. They just stuck to the plan.”

Against a much taller Ridgefield team, Roche credited the defense of Adyson Dyer and Jasmine Shigeno. Though neither stands taller than 5-foot-9, they held Ridgefield’s 6-foot-3 post Allie Andrew to eight points.

Freshman Gracie Brammer scored 11 points to lead the Hawks (6-2, 2-2). Dyer scored all six of her points in the fourth quarter, including two free throws to seal the win. Shigeno had six points, nine rebounds and seven steals.

Grace Goode scored 16 points to lead Ridgefield (2-3, 8-5).
