Has the cold set in for January? Check our local weather coverage.

In case you missed them, here are some of the top stories from the week:

Vancouver motorcyclist dies in crash on Highway 14

A Vancouver man died Wednesday afternoon when his motorcycle struck a guardrail on state Highway 14 in Skamania County east of Washougal.

According to the Washington State Patrol, Anatoliy V. Romashchenko, 33, was heading west on Highway 14 around 3:15 p.m.

For a stretch in 1930, Columbia River was solid, icy runway

The year was 1930, and it was freezing — literally.

The Portland area was coming off a 19-day stretch of sub-freezing temperatures. From Jan. 8 to Jan. 26, the daily high temperature never cleared 32 degrees. It was the longest, most consistent cold spell in the region’s recorded history, according to data from the National Weather Service.

The Columbia River was solid enough to land a plane. That’s a fact, not an expression. On Jan. 31, the moment was immortalized on film — a photograph of Clarence and Glenn Murray standing next to their biplane on the still-frozen river, propeller blurred in motion after the aircraft had glided under the Interstate 5 Bridge and spectators stared from above.

Kaiser Permanente, unions set for court trial

Kaiser Permanente is entangled in a legal battle against some of its employees that could reach trial in March.

Even though Kaiser settled contract negotiations with some labor unions in November, disagreement continues between Kaiser and the Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions, which consists of 11 labor unions in California, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Hawaii, Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia.

About 20 unions that used to be part of the coalition split from it last spring, and finalized their contract with Kaiser.

Vancouver man involved in police chase faces kidnapping allegation

A 33-year-old Vancouver man allegedly involved in a police chase Friday night appeared Monday morning in Clark County Superior Court on allegations that he kidnapped a woman and assaulted her over several days.

Anthony A. Jennings Jr. is accused of second-degree domestic violence kidnapping, fourth-degree domestic violence assault and malicious mischief. Deputy Prosecutor Luka Vitasovic told Judge Robert Lewis that Jennings may be facing a third-strike offense.

Clark Asks: Golden Gate Bridge replica in Ridgefield spans interests

RIDGEFIELD — For more than a decade, passers-by in Ridgefield have enjoyed the sight of a small, orange bridge. It’s not just any bridge, though.

Located on the corner of Northeast 209th Street and 10th Avenue, the 110-foot-long and 17-foot-high structure is a replica of San Francisco’s famed Golden Gate Bridge — looming over a large pond on the property of Denny and Delrae Heasley.

“I painted it this summer. It was looking faded,” he said.
