Battle Ground — Richard Richey, also known as “The Reptile Man,” visited Glenwood Heights Primary School in December for an educational assembly. Students got to see a variety of turtles, lizards, snakes and an alligator up close, and some brave student volunteers even got to hold some of the reptiles. Richey taught students about the animals’ native habitats, hunting and eating behaviors. The assembly was a prize for the students after they achieved their school-wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports goals. The method has been implemented at all schools in the district in support of Battle Ground’s focus on social-emotional learning. Through the program, staff teach behavioral expectations to students and reinforce those expectations with specific acknowledgement systems.
