Weather Eye: Winter storm watch for Clark County, but will it actually snow?

Well, here we go again. This column may sound like a repeat of ones earlier this month. On Saturday, the National Weather Service had a winter storm watch up for much of the area, including Clark County, for tonight and Monday.

Remember the last time we went through this? Grocery stores were cleaned out, including some headlines of kale being grabbed off the shelves. I don’t get that; I hate kale. Anyway, looking at the forecast charts Saturday afternoon, I couldn’t pinpoint an accurate forecast for anything. They have a large snowstorm somewhere between Roseburg, Ore., and Vancouver.

That is a wide spread considering the snow line will only be about 100 miles wide, so any shift in the rain/snow line could mean boom or bust. Right now, I would say most of the heaviest precipitation would remain south of Clark County with maybe Salem getting the bull’s-eye. Only flurries as far north as Kelso. But hey, that will have changed by this morning when you read this.

I am somewhat skeptical about how much cold air can make it down the Gorge as well. The idea is we get cold air from central Washington down the Gorge on east winds, and then warmer precipitation riding above that for a heavy wet snow. Not the kind that blows down the street. After all, it is almost March.

Maybe a snow day here on Monday? Who knows? It’s a possibility. If Vancouver is in the bull’s-eye, we get upward of 8 inches of wet snow. If not maybe a spattering of wet flakes and a slushy snow cover.

Wish I had an exact plan for you, but weather forecasting is not an exact science quite yet. Watch the skies later today, and let’s see what happens. I know school kids will for sure.
