One person was treated for smoke inhalation and a cat was killed in a house fire Saturday night in Vancouver’s Hudson’s Bay neighborhood.

Vancouver firefighters were called at 8:48 p.m. to 2120 E. Eighth St., after the homeowner called 911 to report a fire had started inside the kitchen of his home, according to a news release from the Vancouver Fire Department.

Arriving crews found heavy fire and smoke coming from the two-story house. They pulled a hose line to keep the rapidly growing fire from spreading, the news release states.

Once additional fire crews arrived, they stopped the aggressive interior fire from progressing and had it under control in less than 20 minutes. A cat was unable to escape the fire and died, and a resident was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation but was not transported, according to the news release.

A total of five engines, a ladder truck and three battalion chiefs responded. Clark County Fire District 6 assisted.

The fire displaced three people, who are being assisted by the Red Cross.

The Vancouver Fire Department reminds people to use caution when cooking, have a fire extinguisher available and never re-enter a burning structure for pets or personal belongings.
