Jack Heffernan was hired as The Columbian’s breaking news reporter. Starting on Jan. 14, Heffernan succeeded Andy Matarrese, whose beat shifted to environment, utility and transportation issues in Clark County. Heffernan, who covers courts, police and fire in the afternoons and evenings, previously was a reporter at The Daily Astorian in Astoria, Ore. He received bachelor’s degrees in journalism and political science from the University of Oregon in 2016, and interned at The Register-Guard in Eugene, Ore. He also completed a copy editing internship at the Grand Forks Herald in Grand Forks, N.D., through the Dow Jones News Fund. Get in touch with Heffernan at 360-735-4541; jack.heffernan@columbian.com; or follow him on Twitter at twitter.com/jacktheffernan. Reach Matarrese at 360-735-4457; andy.matarrese@columbian.com; or follow him on Twitter at twitter.com/Andy_Matter
