Weather Eye: There’s a big ‘if’ regarding late-week snow

We got the short end of the stick with regard to snowfall over the weekend and into Monday. The low with the cold arctic air and moisture developed as forecast and did indeed drop down the Washington and Oregon coasts. It remained far enough west that the immediate coastal strip got hammered. Between 2 and 4 inches fell on the Long Beach Peninsula and farther south into Oregon.

As of 5 p.m. Monday, the low was spinning off the Southern Oregon Coast and the wraparound moisture was causing snow flurries in Clark County. The atmosphere tried its best to set up a deformation zone along the Columbia River, but alas, it was too little too late. Some light to moderate snow showers were reported in Battle Ground eastward and in Washougal at the time of my writing.

Temperatures fell during the daytime Monday, but the precipitation was slow to arrive, and much drier air settled over us. It was a close call. I figured the coast would win out this time around but was hoping the pesky unpredictable deformation zone would set up overnight Sunday or early Monday.

OK, moving on we have cold, dry air over us for a few days with lows in the 20s and highs near 40 degrees. Another cold storm drops down from Alaska late Thursday into Friday and Saturday. This will meet the cool air that has settled in over us and will be cold to start with as it moves southward. It won’t carry arctic air with it, so at this point roll the dice to see if we get a better chance of snowfall here in the lowlands.

If we have easterly winds and with a more direct shot of moisture overhead, chances may improve. If — and a big if — is that the southerly winds ahead of the front remain out of the picture. Another forecaster’s nightmare.

Meanwhile, enjoy a couple of chilly but sunny dry days, and let’s get together Thursday and see what the weather gods are offering to bring us.
