The Salmon Creek Hospital Foundation has awarded 13 scholarships, totaling $21,000, through its Chou Nursing Scholarship Fund.

Scholarships go toward the educational advancement of nurses who are working at Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center, according to a Legacy press release.

The fund was established in 2015 through a donation from the Sunlin and Priscilla Chou Foundation of Battle Ground to support nurses pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Master of Science in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice, according to the press release. In December, Sunlin Chou died unexpectedly.

The scholarship fund is awarded twice annually and provides up to $2,000 in financial aid, supplementing the tuition reimbursement available through the Legacy Educational Assistance Program, the press release states.

“The Chou Scholarship will help me become a more well-rounded nurse,” Mandy Westervelt, a registered nurse who works in the Legacy Salmon Creek Birth Center, said in the press release. “I feel very privileged to witness miracles at work every day. The more I learn, the better I can understand and serve my patients.”

These are the 2019 scholarship recipients: Lori Batterberry, Natalie Fedosova, Lisa Hancock, Regina Kaiser, Stacey Milligan, Robyn Rivera, Danielle Shoemaker, McKenzie Traschel and Mandy Westervelt, who are all pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and Diana Brouwer, Gregory Howard, Timofey Kochenkov and Jennifer McDonnell, who are pursuing a Master of Science in Nursing.
