Vancouver dentist marks a life of service

Piled against a wall in a tiny office in Mount Vista Family Dental is the evidence, even if Eugene Sakai isn’t ready to make a ruling yet.

Boxes of coats. Bags of coats. Coats from current patients. Coats from former patients. All 175 coats against the wall, blocking a doorway in the Salmon Creek office, ready to be donated to the Vancouver homeless shelter, Share House.

The coats are evidence that Eugene Sakai, who retired from a 47-year career in Clark County dentistry on Dec. 20, left his profession a better place than he found it — a motto that he tries to live by, but is too modest to give himself credit for.

Two Vancouver recovery centers want sobriety to have its fun moments

About a dozen people are gathered inside Recovery Cafe Clark County in Vancouver, eating sandwiches and chips and playing darts.

There’s a small putting green rolled out on the floor. Conversation flows, and then William O’Connor, 51, steps to the microphone. He looks to his friend Charles Hanset, who’s playing darts.

“Hey Charles, this is your song, OK buddy,” O’Connor jokes.

Top Clark County Business story of 2019: Waterfront’s rising tide

Clark County saw a wide range of important business stories in 2019 – so many that we ran into trouble trying to narrow down a Top 10 list. In the end, we settled for a list of the Top 15 – five primary stories that made the biggest splashes, plus 10 more still-powerful standouts. Without further ado:

1. Growth at The Waterfront

Cowlitz County ambulance stolen during medical call

Emergency responders dispatched to a home north of Kelso for a medical call Friday afternoon had their ambulance stolen by someone at the residence, according to Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue.

An unidentified suspect was arrested following a police chase on southbound Interstate 5, authorities said.

Firefighters went to the residence in the Lexington area in Cowlitz County for a report of “breathing difficulties,” the fire department said in a news release.

NWCAVE continues advocacy for slain transgender Vancouver teen, family

A Vancouver-based women’s coalition is continuing its advocacy in support of slain 17-year-old Nikki Kuhnhausen by warning people about fundraisers not approved by the family and by enrolling the help of a coordinator.

NWCAVE said in a press release that it is continuing to work alongside Lisa Woods, Kuhnhausen’s mother, as the family moves toward a memorial service. The coalition is also overseeing all fundraising on behalf of the family for the funeral and other expenses.

While everyone’s support has been appreciated, the nonprofit noted that not all Go Fund Me Pages are handled by or have been OK’d by Woods.
