EAST VANCOUVER — Shahala Middle School student Ayu Kira was honored as one of the brightest students in the world at the international Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth awards ceremony in Baltimore. Kira was honored for her performance on the SAT, taken as part of the Center for Talented Youth Talent Search. The search uses above-grade-level testing to identify advanced students from around the world and provide a clear picture of their academic abilities. More than 18,000 students in second through eighth grades tested through CTY’s Talent Search between July 1, 2018, and June 30, representing all 50 states and more than 80 countries. More than 2,100 students from this group who scored in the top 12 percent on the test were invited to attend the Nov. 23 ceremony. Kira scored a 700 on the math portion of the SAT. At least 40 of the students who tested through CTY’s Talent Search achieved a perfect score on the reading or math section of the test. More than 380 testers younger than age 13 achieved a score of 700 or higher on the math or verbal section of the SAT, and qualified for CTY’s Julian C. Stanley Study of Exceptional Talent.
