Castle Rock Boys: Rockets loaded with pure athletes

Winning is in the works for the Castle Rock boys. It started on the football field; it’s long taken place on the wrestling mats; and now, the basketball team is hoping to translate it to the hardwood.

The football team competed for a league title this fall, and Wyatt Partridge, a 5-foot-9 junior, and Landon Gardner, a 6-3 sophomore, played big roles. They’ll do the same this winter.

“Landon is becoming a young man. He’s a big guy, incredibly athletic,” coach Hayden Tilton said. “Wyatt is as fast as anybody I’ve seen out there. He’s tough, brave and defends like crazy.”

But the Rockets’ talents goes beyond their top athletes. Post Adam Partridge (6-4) returns for his sophomore season and 6-4 forward Jonny Boissonault returns after a year away from the school.

Jayce Womack, a 5-7 sophomore guard, will add depth.

“I don’t know if I want to put this expectation on him but he’s a Jamal Crawford-esque player,” Tilton said of Womack. “He can get in and light it up quickly.”

Tilton comes from the Mark Morris’ Bill Bakamus coaching tree, meaning he wants his team to be disciplined and tough on defense. Those expectations are starting to sink in during Tilton’s second year.

“My voice is a little raspy now, but two days ago I could barely speak,” Tilton said after an early-season practice. “They’re really picking it up well.”
