Mountain View Girls: New leadership for Thunder

For the past nine years, Dan Larson has coached boys. As a varsity assistant at Hudson’s Bay, Fort Vancouver and Mountain View, Larson learned the ropes.

His first year as head coach, though, is with the Thunder girls.

“It’s been a transition,” Larson said. “There’s lots of positive to coaching the girls. This is the most coachable team I’ve been around. You tell them what to do and they’ll do it.”

That’s a good thing for the Thunder, who bring a fresh-faced group into a jam-packed league. All-league pick Paytin Ballard transferred to Hudson’s Bay. Dejah Wilson transferred to Columbia River.

That leaves Jenna Carlson, a 5-foot-8 senior guard, as the lone all-league returner.

“She’s going to provide big minutes for us and be a senior leader and voice of the team,” Larson said.

Senior guard Ari Pizone is coming off surgery but is expected to contribute. Freshmen Katelyn Henderson (5-2) and Ella Schoene (6-0) are also anticipating big roles.

“It’s starting to come together,” Larson said. “It’s still a little clunky, but it’s starting to look functional.”

The road ahead is a tough one, though. Prairie, Hudson’s Bay and Kelso are clear favorites atop the 3A Greater St. Helens League.

“We want to scrap, claw, be physical and push the tempo. Do all the things that make those other teams uncomfortable,” Larson said. “Hopefully in two months, we’re the team that people don’t want to play.”
