Hudson’s Bay Girls: Watch out for loaded Eagles squad

There’s an air of excitement around the Hudson’s Bay girls basketball program. And for good reason: this could be Hudson’s Bay’s most talented team in a decade, if not in program history.

Fresh off a 19-7 season, the Eagles return their stars, a sophomore all-league transfer, and pair of freshmen to a team ready to dominate.

“They have very high goals,” fourth-year coach Michael Rainville said. “They’re really looking forward to this year.”

It all starts with all-league players Jaydia Martin, a 5-foot-11 junior guard, and Kamelai Powell, a 5-10 junior forward. Aniyah Hampton, a 5-9 sophomore, is recovering from a torn Achilles but is due back by January. That three-pronged attack was good enough to send the Eagles to their first regional appearance since 2007.

This offseason, they only got better. Mountain View transfer Paytin Ballard, an all-league pick last year, joined the team for her sophomore campaign.

Freshmen Devon Johnson-Brown and Mahaila Harrison are also expected to immediately be impact players.

“We’ve got more talent than we’ve ever had,” Rainville said.

The scarier part, perhaps, is that none of their key players are seniors. It means the Eagles will get at least two good runs at a state trophy, something the program has never accomplished. They made the quarterfinals in 2007.
