CAMAS — Tuesday night’s Camas-Hudson’s Bay girls basketball game could be boiled down to one stat – bench scoring.
The Papermakers won that battle 20-0, and that was more than enough to send Camas to a 68-53 non-league victory.
“We like to think our depth is our strength,” Camas coach Scott Thompson said. “If we go five-on-five against most teams, we might get beat. But we like to get everyone involved, keep the tempo going and wear teams down. And we did that tonight.”
Jalena Carlisle says Camas’ depth allows the Papermakers to keep the intensity going all game long.
“It’s fun to have all those girls deep in the bench,” Carlisle said. “I can go 110 percent because I know someone’s got me. And I can get right back in, so they can give 100 percent. And we keep rotating in.”
Carlisle scored 14 of her 19 points in the first half when post Faith Bergstrom struggled to find her shot. Carlisle scored Camas’ first eight points of the game, including two 3-pointers.
“I know I’ve got my (big players) down low, and (the Eagles) weren’t coming out on defense,” the junior said. “So I was like ‘If they’re not going to guard me, I’ll start shooting.’ ”
But Bergstrom found her shot in the second half, scoring 13 of her 17 points after the intermission.
“Faith will do that to you,” Thompson said. “You think she’s not having a good scoring game, and she ends up with 17. She’s just a walking bucket.
“If she got her shots to fall tonight, she could have put up 30. But she still drew the defense to her, controlled the lane. So even though she didn’t shoot well, I still feel like she played a good game.”
Carlisle scored six and Bergstrom added four during a pivotal 14-0 run to start the second quarter that turned a 15-12 Bay lead into a 26-15 Papermaker advantage.
After the Eagles closed to within 26-21, Camas scored 14 of the quarter’s last 16 points to take a 40-23 lead at halftime.
Bay never got closer than 15 the rest of the way, despite 27 points from Jaydia Martin.
“She earned those 27 points with some incredibly tough shots,” Thompson said. “We made her work for them.”
Bay (4-2) got all of its points from just four players, including 49 of its 53 from three players. Paytin Ballard and Kamelai Powell added 11 points each.
Camas got scoring from nine of its 10 players, including 3-pointers from non-starters Haylie Johnson, Avery Minich and Kyra Seggewiss.
“We all have really good chemistry,” Carlisle said. “So going in it, I already know all the girls. So when we have five coming in, we can go ‘55 hard defense’ all the time and know your subs are coming in. We trust each other.”
