A Vancouver teacher is one of 10 finalists for the national title of 2019’s History Teacher of the Year.
John Zingale, a history teacher at Vancouver iTech Preparatory School, is in the running for the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History award. He was also recognized the 2019 Washington state History teacher of the year. The organization honors teachers from each state, Washington D.C., Department of Defense schools and United States territories.
Zingale, who has taught at the Vancouver Public Schools campus since 2012, was recognized for his commitment to blending history with technology. Zingale’s students have worked to develop the Fort Vancouver Virtual Reality tour and museum, among other projects.
For his recognition as Washington state History Teacher of the Year, Zingale will receive a $1,000 honorarium and recognition at a state ceremony. His school will also receive a set of American history books and Gilder Lehrman educational materials.
The Gilder Lehrman Institute will announce the National History Teacher of the Year in September. The recipient will receive a $10,000 prize and recognition at a special ceremony in New York City in October.
