Primetime looked prime to get its first victory at the Babe Ruth 16-18 World Series on Sunday in Mobile, Ala.
However, the Bakersfield (Calif.) Wave scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to steal a 7-6 victory, sending the Pacific Northwest champs from Clark County to 0-2 in pool play.
Primetime jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning on a bases-loaded walk and fielder’s choice groundout, only to have Bakersfield score four runs in the bottom of the second and add one more in the fourth.
Primetime got two runs back in the fifth ining on Hayden Williamson’s ground out, and a single by Tanner McDonald to make it 5-4.
An error in the sixth inning allowed the tying run to score for Primetime, and another error on a ground ball scored Wyatt Wooden for a 6-5 Primetime lead.
Bakersfield (3-0), the Pacific Southwest champion, opened the bottom of the seventh with a double, sacrifice bunt and a walk. The Wave then scored the tying run on a single.
With two outs and runners at second and third, the Wave scored the winning run on a error.
Dillon Hamilton went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and a stolen base for Primetime.
The two teams combined for nine errors and 16 men left on base.
Needing a victory to keep hopes alive for bracket play, Primetime next faces Middle Atlantic Region champion Onondaga, N.Y., at 4:30 p.m. Monday, and then Ohio Valley Region champion Crown Point, Ind., at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.
The top two teams from the two four-team brackets advance to single-elimination play starting Wednesday.
