Columbia River’s Rhoads wins three events at Twilight meet

Multi-event star puts in a workout racing between events

The real workout for Giovanna Rhoads wasn’t winning three events Friday at the John Ingram Twilight Meet.

In bouncing between the long jump, high jump and triple jump, the Columbia River senior covered plenty of ground.

“That’s kind of the joke of it,” Rhoads said. “I’m running between events the whole entire meet. … I’m getting a workout, for sure.”

Friday’s triple triumph at Columbia River High might be a warmup for the track season’s pinnacle. Rhoads might try to qualify for the state meet in four events, adding the 200 meters to three field events in which she has posted as least the second-best mark in Class 2A statewide this season.

It all comes in stride for an athlete who hates to sit still, even in practice.

“My coaches are like ‘take your time, rest for five minutes between drills,’ Rhoads said. “But I just can’t do it. I have to get them done. So it’s nice to be occupied the whole meet.”

Last season, Rhoads reached the state meet in two events, placing seventh in the high jump and 11th in the triple jump.

After an offseason of intense training, she’s well on her way to reaching state in three field events.

Friday, she won the high jump by clearing 5 feet, 4 inches, joining Woodland’s Nicolle Guthrie as the only 2A athletes to have cleared that height this season, according to Athletic.net.

Rhoads also leads all 2A athletes in the triple jump with a mark of 36 feet, 9 inches. Though she leapt 36-0 Friday, that mark still won by nearly four feet.

Rhoads won the long jump Friday in 16-5. Her personal best of 17-1 ranks No. 2 in 2A.

But Friday’s performance wasn’t as simple as stepping up to the jump runway or clearing the high jump bar.

As the long jump wound down, Rhoads sprinted down the length of the field to the high jump to see if the bar had reached a height she wanted to attempt.

As she and Seton Catholic’s Jerrica Pachl dueled in the high jump, Rhoads had a friend check on the status of the triple jump so she wouldn’t miss her jumps and be disqualified.

Rhoads and Pachl both cleared 5-foot-4 in the high jump. Though Pachl finished second due to more misses, her personal-best Friday is the highest so far in Class 1A statewide.

That high jump duel meant Rhoads missed her practice runs on triple jump. Not to worry, Rhoads had already done plenty of sprinting Friday.

Running also occupies a lot of her training.

“Jumping is definitely synonymous with sprinting,” she said. “You have to have to sprint mechanics to jump. Jumps come with power. You need quick muscle twitch.”

With workouts centering on sprinting drills and explosive speed, Rhoads hopes to put that to further use in the 200 meters, an event she’s tried once this season.

“My competitive side came out, so I want to get to state in it,” she said. “I’m going to try and do all four one meet before districts and see how it goes.”

Friday’s meet, which included nine teams from Southwest Washington, also saw two fast races by two Washougal distance runners.

Amelia Pullen clocked the second-fastest 2A time this season in the 3,200 meters. She won in a personal-best time of 10 minutes, 59.84 seconds in a race that included Hockinson’s Allyson Peterson (Fourth-best time in 2A) and Fort Vancouver’s Emily Phelps (sixth-best in 3A)

Pullen, who won the 2A state cross country championship in the fall, recently signed to run at Warner Pacific University in Portland. The senior’s time Friday was two seconds faster than her third-place finish at last year’s state meet.

Fellow Panther Gabriel Dinnell ran a personal best to win the 1,600 in 4:29.45, the second-fastest time this season in 2A. Dinnell already owns the fastest 2A time in the 3,200.

Columbia River sophomore Levi Williams became to first 2A athlete this season to clear 14 feet in the pole vault, winning on Friday by 18 inches.

Skyview’s Zach Maier won the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles, helping the Storm to the team championship. Skyview’s 142 points were 21 ahead of second-place Kelso.

Washougal won the girls team trophy with 122 points, three ahead of Seton Catholic. Aurora Espinoza-Chaney (100 meters) and Katie Stevens (pole vault) joined Pullen as individual winners.
