Fishing report, April 5

Spring Chinook angling is open to both boat and bank anglers from Warrior Rock upstream to Beacon Rock on the Columbia River. Beacon Rock to Bonneville Dam is open to bank angling only. Fishing for salmon, steelhead, and shad is closed From Buoy 10 at the river’s mouth to Warrior Rock.

Spring Chinook angling is open from Tower Island power lines upstream to the Oregon/Washington border above McNary Dam, plus the banks between Bonneville Dam and Tower Island power lines.

White sturgeon retention is closed from Buoy 10 upstream to Bonneville Dam, in The Dalles Pool, and in the John Day Pool, but remains an option for catch-and-release fishing.

Bonneville pool is open to the retention of white sturgeon until quotas are reached.

Trout fishing in local lakes has been good.

Steelheading is fair on the Cowlitz River.

Walleye fishing is good in the Bonneville Pool, and excellent in the John Day pool.

Salmon/Steelhead

Thirty-two spring Chinook crossed Bonneville Dam this weak, bringing the total to 48 adults. Fifty-one adult spring Chinook crossed over the Willamette Falls this week, bringing the yearly total to 65.

Warrior Rock to Bonneville Dam — 434 salmonid boats and 70 Washington bank rods were tallied during last Saturdays flight count.

Bonneville — 146 bank anglers kept 7 adult spring Chinook, released two, and released one steelhead. Two boats (three anglers), had no catch.

Camas/Washougal — Nine boats (18 rods) had no catch

Vancouver — 65 bank anglers had no catch. 375 boats (877 anglers) kept 55 adult spring Chinook and released 15 adults, two jacks, and one steelhead.

Cowlitz River — I-5 Bridge downstream: 21 bank rods kept five steelhead and released five Chinook jacks. Above the I-5 Bridge: Eight bank rods kept nine steelhead; 24 boats/81 rods kept 44 steelhead and released three steelhead.

Kalama River — 19 bank anglers released one steelhead. Seven boats/16 rods kept one steelhead and released four steelhead.

Lewis River — Eight bank anglers had no catch.

Recent trout plants

Battle Ground Lake — Planted with 2,000 rainbow trout at 2.5 per pound on April 1.

Lacamas Lake — Planted with 4,300 rainbow trout at 1.8 per pound on April 1.

Sturgeon

Bonneville Pool — 16 bank anglers kept two legal sturgeon and released nine sublegal sturgeon. Ten boats/27 rods kept seven legal sturgeon, released 86 sublegal and one oversize sturgeon.

John Day Pool — 62 bank anglers kept nine legal sturgeon, released 44 sublegal and 15 oversize sturgeon; 11 boats/23 rods kept eight legal sturgeon, released one legal, 40 sublegal and one oversize sturgeon.

Walleye

Bonneville Pool — Three boats/eight rods released 12 walleye.

John Day Pool — 44 boats/111 rods kept 172 walleye and released 12 walleye.

Bass

Bonneville Pool — Five boats/seven rods released 16 bass.

John Day Pool — Four boats/seven rods kept 13 bass and released 12 bass.
