A Clark County man alleged by authorities to be the “Froggy Robber” made an initial appearance Friday in U.S. District Court in Oregon in connection with five Portland-area bank robberies.
Diego Sanchez-Lopez, 23, appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Stacie F. Beckerman on a five-count federal indictment alleging he robbed the banks between November 2017 and April 2018. The court previously unsealed the indictment, according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Justice.
An indictment is only an accusation of a crime, and a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Sanchez-Lopez allegedly stole more than $87,000 from banks insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the news release states.
He is accused of stealing $9,710 from Albina Community Bank, 2002 N.E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., in Portland on Nov. 27; $26,000 from Wells Fargo Bank, 8699 S.W. Main St., in Wilsonville, Ore., on Dec. 27; $11,580.99 from Wells Fargo Bank, 6785 Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway in Beaverton, Ore., on Jan. 11; $6,720 from U.S. Bank, 52313 Columbia River Highway in Scappoose, Ore., on Jan. 30; and $33,357 from Wells Fargo Bank, 7200 N.E. Butler St., in Hillsboro, Ore., on April 30.
In each incident, he allegedly used a knife to facilitate the robbery, the news release says. He was dubbed the Froggy Robber because he jumped over the teller counters at his targeted banks.
Sanchez-Lopez is in custody pending trial. A four-day jury trial is set for March 27 before U.S. District Court Judge Michael H. Simon, according to the news release.
