Fishing report, Sept. 27

White sturgeon retention is closed from Buoy 10 at the mouth of the Columbia River upstream to the Oregon/Washington Border above McNary Dam, but remains an option for catch-and-release fishing.

Walleye fishing is good in the John Day Pool.

Coho salmon are entering the Columbia River tributaries. A good spell of rain is needed to bring in the fish.

High country trout lakes are peaking right now and should be good until the snow comes.

Panfish and bass continue to bite in local lakes and the Columbia River

Salmon, Steelhead

Columbia River — Angling for, and retention of, all salmon and steelhead is prohibited until further notice.

Cowlitz River — Closed for Chinook retention from the mouth to the Barrier Dam including all lower Cowlitz tributaries, except the Toutle River. Until further notice, the closed waters section below the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery Barrier Dam is 400 feet at the posted markers.

I-5 Bridge downstream: 127 bank rods kept two chinook, two coho jacks and released three chinook and 5 coho jacks. 55 boats/141 rods kept eight chinook, three chinook jacks, two coho, 69 coho jacks and released 32 chinook, 39 chinook jacks, nine coho, 25 coho jacks and one cutthroat.

Above the I-5 Bridge: 48 bank rods kept one chinook, two steelhead, one cutthroat and released three chinook. four boats/nine rods kept four steelhead.

Elochoman River — two anglers had no catch.

Kalama River — 27 bank anglers released one chinook and one steelhead.

Lewis River — 112 bank anglers kept one chinook, three steelhead, three coho, three coho jacks and released one chinook, one coho and three coho jacks. Twenty boats/49 rods kept six chinook, one chinook jack, one coho, 14 coho jacks and released 15 chinook, 20 chinook jacks and four coho jacks.

Drano Lake — 38 bank anglers kept two chinook, one chinook jack and released 2 steelhead. Sixty-six boats/182 rods kept 59 chinook, 36 jacks, eight coho and two coho jacks and released three chinook jacks, eight steelhead and one coho.

Klickitat River — 27 bank anglers kept four chinook and four chinook jacks.

Wind River — from the mouth to 400 feet below Shepherd Falls, closed for steelhead retention and closed to night fishing for salmon and steelhead.

Drano Lake — Closed for steelhead retention and closed to night fishing for salmon and steelhead.

White Salmon River — from the mouth to the county road bridge below the former location of the powerhouse, closed for steelhead retention and closed to night fishing for salmon and steelhead.

Walleye

John Day Pool — Weekly checking showed 81 walleye kept, plus 27 walleye released for 32 boats (66 anglers).

Warm Water Fishing

Lacamas Lake is still producing nice largemouth.

Panfish are active in local lakes, the Columbia River, and the backwater lakes. Look for the fish to put on the feedbag over the next month to prepare for winter.
