Gaiser Middle School was evacuated at about 10:40 a.m. Monday when an iPad started sparking after a student bent it repeatedly.

The student was in the bathroom with the iPad, and smoke leaked out into the hallway so someone called 911.

The Clark County Fire Marshal responded and is investigating the incident, although a letter sent home to parents from Vancouver Public Schools said it is believed that the smoke was caused by the bending of the iPad.

The tablet was owned by the student and not one issued from the school district.

Shortly after 11 a.m., crews from Clark County Fire District 6 declared the building safe and all students and staff returned to class. The south hallway near the restroom remained closed.

There were no injuries.
