Battle Ground board holds special meeting to consider ‘legal action’

Teachers and community members are expected to pack the Lewisville Campus this evening, as the Battle Ground Public Schools board considers a resolution authorizing legal action to address the ongoing teacher strike.

The district has not specified whether this means it intends to file an injunction to stop its teachers striking, but appears to set the stage to do so.

The Battle Ground Education Association, in response, took to social media to rally supporters to attend the meeting. But, the union warned people not to clap, yell or bring signs. At Monday’s board meeting, President Ken Root closed the meeting to all but reporters after the room erupted into applause after the final speaker.

“WE WILL NOT GIVE THEM AN EXCUSE TO KICK US OUT,” the union posted in a Facebook event. “MAKE SURE EVERYONE KNOWS.”

Tonight’s meeting is a special meeting which means the board will not hear public comment per board policy, district spokeswoman Rita Sanders said.

Negotiations between the union and district are ongoing. The district has canceled school Thursday.

The meeting is at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Lewisville Campus, 406 N.W. Fifth Ave., Battle Ground. Columbian reporter Katie Gillespie will attend and live-tweet tonight’s meeting. You can follow her here or on Twitter.
